Encounter – Ronen Siman Tov Talks to Maya and Porat SolomonRonen: Porat, you have several works that address the motif of "the caravan", why?
Porat: Well, these are works that I have done when we were in fact living in a caravan. It is an abstraction of a house, like a sukkah – the minimum required to demarcate a place of residence, minus all the benefits a house is supposed to offer: warmth, permanence and protection. Within a stressful context, with huge windows and paper walls, more than it protects it conceals, represses. I consider all that to be a laboratory in which I can examine the foundations, concepts like masculinity, fatherhood, being a husband. Reflect on the fantasies that generate these concepts and what happens to them in the margins. R: Maya, the material is very present in your works as a sort of "magma" or a primal "raw" material like in the creation of the world, does this aspect have any connection to where you chose to live? Maya: No, my interest in the material does not lie in its "holiness" or in the context of belonging. In the material I look for a micro-cosmos that in the way I work with it, up to its collapse, I subject it to natural phenomena, "forces of nature". The material accumulates the violence acted upon it, and its rupture carries with it the beauty of the catastrophe. R: Porat, Bat Ayin is not just another settlement (place), it has a strong "underground" stigma. I refer you to two important works of yours: Bat Ayin's resistance prisoners, and around the Shabbat table with a gun and a baby. You seem to react in your art to the place you live in. What drives you to touch these subjects the way you treat them? P: "Treat" is not the right word for me. I do not have any interest to talk in the works about the resistance or about "Bat Ayin". The works address the most abstract questions, like the ability to understand the motives of the other, and particularly "the delinquent other", and more specifically – the delinquent who acts in the name of his faith (in the work Yarden, a prisoner from the Bat Ayin resistance), or questions of fatherhood and family (in the photograph Shabbat, with the gun and baby). I mark these questions where I find them, and therefore, in my close surroundings. R: Maya, it is interesting to think of your "receptacles" in the communal context of "rituals". I thought about a rite or a ritual of distribution. Every family comes and receives a vessel/container with water or oil, what do you think? M: My sculpture works usually start with vessels that I build on the potter's wheel. Their starting point is in something that is built, made. It has an order that creates the ability to contain. Even after their collapse and tear, they still hold the memory of this ability. Or perhaps to pick up your association, they are now "desecrated vessels". R: Porat, communal rituals like "Tisch" (Shabbat Table) or "Hillulah" are treated a lot in your work, both in the oil on canvas works as well as in the public domain, on a bulletin board on HaAyin Chet Street in Musrara, for instance. What interests you about the theme of congregating around the Admor's (Rebbe) table? P: This situation of the Admor's Tisch bears a rather weird resemblance to the Christian "Last Supper". The figure standing in the middle of the crowd handing out his "remnants", and the worship-betrayal relationship they direct towards it. I am fascinated with the figure of The Illuminated, the "one who knows" and the violent disruption he embodies in the crowd that threatens to engulf him. He is a part of them, he is their center, but also a representative of the "other" within them, the seed of evil. That is the artist. R: Maya, I have the feeling that if you could dig up the earth with your hands to gather material for the works, you would. Would you be doing the same thing in a different place in the world? M: It is not the soil that is sacred - the action is what's sacred. Anywhere in the world, my action is what stands between me and the material. The earth is just earth. R: Porat, you deal a lot with Spanish Baroque, in what way do you identify with this cultural era that is so distinctly synonymous with devout Christianity? P: It is indeed the height of devout Christianity; A religious, ecstatic climax but also the height of hyper reality. For me it is a pure moment of art asking God to materialize in the flesh, in the material, and therefore my moment to stand up on my Jewish hind legs and wonder about the whole story with art. The choice to wallow in the flesh and seek God in the matter and in the visible is the foundation of worship-betrayal relations between art and reality, and that is where I draw from. R: Maya and Porat, could you tell me about your joint work for the Artist's Wall at the Artist's Studios. I see a black and white painting of an apse (prayer alcove) and a vessel with bullet holes. This work reminds me of the work Sabbath, with the gun and baby; in what way are the questions generated in the current works related to the work Shabbat? P: The invitation was Maya's, who invited me to shoot at her vase. We entered this experiment without knowing what is going to happen. It is hard to anticipate what will take place in the exertion of such a violent force, one whose mere appearance in clay gives you chills of anxiety. But the wet clay is so gracious, that it took even this violent penetration with acceptance, folded and contained within itself the memory of the catastrophe that passed through it. M: The next phase was to give me back the vase that was shot, and make it into a "monument" to this power that had passed through it. Continue its natural life course, the one of earthenware: bake, glaze, bake again; Keep on living as though nothing had happened. P: That must have something to do with the house we just finished building. M: Maybe, this commemoration has some holiness to it; Admiration for the potential disaster, for this power. This brings us to you painting, which is a sort of an empty and dark apses protected by a steel shell. A little like a sarcophagus. A place to be swallowed up in. P: That is true, its dimensions are in fact the dimensions of my body. It is something between a cathedral and a rocket. It is the possibility of the pictorial surface to allow for a niche that will hold the viewer's body. The viewing is done with the body that sees its own presence in the scale of the pictorial space. Nestling inside the rocket, on the way to the sublime. There is a performance piece by Marina Abramović, in which she and her partner hold a bow and an arrow between them, and lean back so that the taut bowstring directs the arrow towards the woman's heart. As long as they continue to hold onto one another, the arrow will not be released. But the mutual leaning is also what brings about the potential of disaster. It is a very powerful image of a relationship. R: What do you think about Gideon Ofrat's 1993 article "New Directions", in which he raises the question "could there be good art in the religious right"? P: His prophetic presumption is breathtaking, almost empirical. And he is right, of course. The religious right cannot produce good art, or any art. Nor can the left, religious as it may be. Art does not happen anywhere, only in the free space. |
