Textile Newspapers | Milica Dukić
The Textile Newspapers project started as a collaboration between the visual artist Milica Dukić and the teachers and students of the Milan Petrović School in Novi Sad, Serbia. Milan Petrović School is an institution whose mission is to educate and train persons with all kinds of disabilities. The project aimed to problematize the quantity and quality of visual) information that we obtain by browsing/reading the daily press. Dukić initially created a textile version of a newspaper in 2020, when she participated in an Art Book exhibition. This version was made of pillowcases and old fabrics on which the Polish daily newspaper Super Express was copied, while the contours and color surfaces were embroidered; stylized photographic materials from pages of that newspaper were re-created using embroidery. Dukić then embroidered a “copy” of the Serbian daily press Kurir, in cooperation with the participants of the Milan Petrović day care program. This work was exhibited at the Youth Biennale in Belgrade in 2021.* This collaboration was repeated in 2022, with notable success, and it resulted in three new art objects: two Serbian newspapers, Danas and Večernje Novosti, and a Hungarian newspaper named Blikk. Dukić is an active visual artist and a social activist. She was engaged in many volunteer opportunities during her youth and adulthood in Serbia and abroad. With her team, she was able to raise funds to sponsor this collective and inclusive art project, which was presented in City Libraries in Novi Sad. For that occasion, Dukić hired eight artists who worked together and also was able to support the school through this funding. Dukić managed this project from Jerusalem, where she has been a long-term volunteer with the organization AKIM-Jerusalem. Since January 2023, Milica has been a guest artist at the Art Cube Artists’ Studios, where she had the opportunity to invite the public to join her in the process of making new art books. Open studio days have become a place of gathering and exchanging information, recognizing and supporting one another, and a place of shared experiences (as an alternative to the isolation of individual studio work that is done alone). For Dukić, it has been a great way to meet other colleagues and be directly in touch with the local art scene. Participants joined to be part of a creative atmosphere and explore a contemporary embroidery technique while “mapping” the abundance of visual material that is mass-produced, quickly consumed, and thrown away even faster. Stitching points out the information fatigue we experience, and, in a way, it slows down the process of reading since stitching is extremely slow by itself. So far, more than 60 participants have joined these workshops. Several residents of the AKIM organization contributed to the project as well. The impact of the Textile Newspapers project is in that it is inclusive. It invites everyone to experience the creation of contemporary art objects (art for all). The embroidered artbooks allow the blind and visually impaired a reading experience and encourage a tactile understanding of the newspapers for the broader public. By randomly selecting daily issues of different newspapers, the artist indirectly creates an overview of the years in which these issues were printed (2020-2023). In some newspapers, important news (pandemic, wars) occupy only a minor place, while there is much more information about celebrities, so a viewer in the future will not really have much information about what happened during this period. This becomes evident only when an issue is artistically decontextualized and separated from the discourse of the daily press. It is seen in a new light and not as a short-lived, expendable, colorful daily piece of entertainment and information. Besides a new series of works titled Crosswords, and previously created artbooks, the exhibition presents work in progress that is directly inspired by the following newspapers: Russian (Луч), Israeli (ידיעות אחרונות), and Palestinian (Al-Quds). It is interesting that Milica decided to work on documents in languages that she can’t read. That may be the reason why she is more concentrated on “translating” only visual materials into non-traditional embroidery. During this exhibition, which will be shown at the Art Cube Artists’ Studios until July 21st, visitors have the opportunity to experience this process, by contributing to works in progress. During the time of the exhibition, until July 21, artists will host Open Embroidery Workshops days as well as exhibition tours: Tuesdays: 10:00-13:00 Wednesdays: 18:00-20:00 Fridays: 10:00-14:00 *The artwork titled Kurir May 16th, 2021, is currently exhibited as part of the group exhibition Dark Noise, curated by Irit Carmon Popper at the Kupferman Collection Haus, at Kibbutz Lohamei HaGeta’ot. |
