“Date with an Artist” is a series of online meetings with artists, that probe the unique ways in which artists deal with the challenges of our times. It will provide a platform for connecting and exchanging ideas on care and engagement in times of crisis, manifesting the originality and importance of artistic practice through the digital realm and beyond.
In his artistic practice, Martin Krenn tries to develop methods to capture past events in present surroundings and examines the shift of the meaning of images in different historical and political contexts. For “Date with an Artist”, art educator Andrea Hubin joins him for a dialogue on his two video works, One Shot and Word’s End. In the works, Krenn investigates the roles of image politics, documentary evidence and how history influences the present and vice versa. Hubin will propose a carefully designed set of questions to open up the conversation to the knowledge and diverse readings of the audience participants. Andrea Hubin is an art historian and educator. She studied art history at the University of Vienna and, for a short while, modern dance at the Amsterdam School of Art. Her main work affiliation is the education department at Kunsthalle Wien, the gallery for contemporary art of the City of Vienna. Since 1999 she has been developing methods of experimental interaction with audiences for art institutions and museums, among others for the Volkskundemuseum Wien, the Generali Foundation Wien and the Berlin Biennial 5. 2007 she was part of the arts education project at the documenta 12 and the associated knowledge transfer project DEUTSCH WISSEN. Subsequently she did research on educative concepts of the first documenta (1955). She researches and publishes on the subject of art education and is a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (department of didactics). She is a member of the Viennese intertwining hi/stories working group of the international network Another Roadmap for Arts Education. In this context she published, together with Karin Schneider, on difficult historical legacies of progressive art education and traditions of Child Art in Vienna. As an art historian, she has edited two comprehensive catalogues on the Dieter & Gertraud Bogner Collection at the mumok Vienna. Martin Krenn is an artist, artistic researcher and curator. He works as a professor of art mediation/education at the Institute of Fine Art, Braunschweig University of Art and as a lecturer at the Vienna Master of Arts in Applied Human Rights at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Krenn uses various types of media, including text, photography and video. Most of his projects in public space take the form of social sculpture. By consistently expanding the field of art, he tries to initiate discussions about socio-political topics and thereby challenges conventional thinking. Krenn graduated in Electronic Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, in 1996 and holds an M.A. (Mag. art.) from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, since 1997. Krenn was awarded a PhD for his project “The Political Space in Social Art Practices” by the Ulster University, Faculty of Art, Design and the Built Environment, Belfast in 2016. Martin Krenn has had numerous international exhibitions, including solo shows/projects in public space in Graz (Neue Galerie and Gallerie Zimmermann Kratochwill), Salzburg (Salzburger Kunstverein and Galerie 5020), Brest (Centre d’art Passerelle), Lüneburg (Kunstraum Lüneburg), München (Kunstraum München [public space]), Ljubljana (Mala galerija Cankarjev Dom), Celje (Center for Contemporary Art) and Bucharest (Centre for Visual Introspection).He participated in group shows e.g. in Vienna (Weltmuseum Wien and the Museum House of Austrian History), Paris (Apegac/Espace Donguy), Antwerpen (NICC), Amsterdam (W139), Kobe (Videoart Center Tokyo), Berlin (NGBK), Helsingborg (Dunkers Kulturhus), Hong Kong (Hong Kong Art Center), Leipzig (Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst), Toronto (Toronto Free Gallery), Vancouver (Artspeak Gallery), Holon (The Israely Center of Digital Art), Thun (Kunstmuseum Thun), Pori (Pori Art Museum) and Sibiu (The National Brukenthal Museum). |
