Karol Shmueli (1992) lives and works in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. She holds a BFA in photography from Bezalel (2018) and is a photography, video and performance artist.

Shmueli’s work is driven by her female identity that does not answer to social standards. In her work, she tries to explore the boundaries of this identity through still photography, video and documented performance.

As an artist, it is very important for me to try to peel back the layers and expose what lies behind veil that surrounds the field of mental health. In my work I am interested in examining whether there can be any respite from the pursuit of beauty, thinness, and self-acceptance? Do we deserve to be? Or will we continue to imagine our reality as we would like it to be?

Shmueli has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions, including Orly Dvir Studio (2020), Central Gallery, New Central Bus Station, Tel Aviv (2019),  École national supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris (2018), Jaffa Port Gallery (2016) and more. She was the winner of the prize for excellence in development from Bezalel’s Department of Photography for 2016. She participated in a student exchange in 2017 at the École national supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris.

تنطلق أعمال شموئيلي من هويتها كامرأة لا تلبي المعايير الاجتماعية. فهي تحاول في أعمالها فحص حدود هذه الهوية بواسطة التصوير الفوتوغرافي، الفيديو والأداء الموثق.1

كفنانة منتجة، يهمني جدا محاولة إزالة الغلاف والتستر الكبير الذي يحيط بمجال الصحة النفسية. انا معنية في أعمالي بفحص ما اذا كان ممكنًا الوصول الى هدوء وتوقّف الجري خلف الجمال، النحافة والقبول الذاتي؟ هل يليق بنا أن نكون أم سنواصل تخيّل واقعنا مثلما نريد له أن يكون.1

عرضت شموئيلي في عدد من المعارض الجماعية منها: جاليري أورلي دفير (2020)، الجاليري المركزي، المحطة المركزية الجديدة، تل أبيب (2019)، المدرسة الوطنية العليا للفنون الجميلة، باريس (2018), جاليري مينا يافا (2016) وغيرها. حائزة على جائزة التفوق في التطوير من قسم التصوير في بتسلئيل للعام 2016. شاركت في برامج تبادل طلابي عام 2017 في المدرسة الوطنية العليا للفنون الجميلة ، باريس.1

היצירה של שמואלי מונעת מתוך זהותה הנשית שלא עונה על הסטנדרטיים החברתיים. בעבודותיה היא מנסה לבחון את הגבולות של זהות זו באמצעות צילום סטילס, וידאו ופרפורמנס מתועד.1

כיוצרת, חשוב לי מאוד לנסות ולהסיר את המעטפת, ואת ההסתרה הגדולה שקיימת סביב תחום בריאות הנפש. בעבודותי אני מעוניינת לבדוק האם יכולה להיות מנוחה מהמרדף אחר יופי, רזון, וקבלה עצמית? האם אנחנו ראויות להיות? או שמא – נמשיך לדמיין את המציאות שלנו כפי שהיינו רוצות.1

שמואלי הציגה במספר תערוכות קבוצתיות, בניהן: גלריה אורלי דביר (2020), הגלריה המרכזית, התחנה המרכזית החדשה, תל אביב (2019), בית הספר הלאומי הגבוה לאמנויות היפות, פריז (2018), גלריית נמל יפו (2016) ועוד. זוכת פרס מצוינות לפיתוח המחלקה לצילום בצלאל לשנת 2016. השתתפה בחילופי סטודנטים בשנת 2017 בבית הספר הלאומי הגבוה לאמנויות היפות, פריז.1
