Drift
‘Drift’ is a group exhibition featuring artists from the Art Cube Artists’ Studios in Jerusalem, focusing on creative processes and the central role that not-knowing has in artistic work. The exhibition ties in with the main theme of Manofim Festival 2026 – ‘Recognition’ – and seeks to explore the space that comes before knowledge and recognition: a zone of searching, experimenting, a patient stay, and coming into being. During the festival, the exhibition will host two open studio events, along with live performances by several of the Studios artists in their studio space. The exhibition invites visitors to stay in a space of not-knowing as a conscious stance: not as an absence that needs filling, but as a fertile field where possibilities are still undecided and there’s no expectation to settle them. The works do not aim to provide answers, but rather to delay the moment of knowing or revelation, to create pauses for lingering, and to invite encounters with what hasn’t yet been articulated. In this space, knowledge isn’t a starting point but a late outcome, while creation happens exactly in the spot where thought drifts like a cloud, allowing images, materials, and meanings to emerge from the mist. This concept relies on three intertwined theoretical aspects. From a philosophical perspective, not-knowing is understood not only as a primary epistemic* state but also as a conscious choice — a deliberate postponement of knowledge and judgment as an active stance from which meaning emerges, rather than as a flaw to be overcome. From the psychological aspect, creativity is tied to the ability to cultivate mental flexibility and tolerance for the tension between knowing and not knowing. And finally, from a practical perspective, not knowing is not just a state of mind but a way of acting: work processes based on experimentation, response, and gradual formation, where knowledge arises from doing rather than precedes it. Not-knowing as material. These three aspects converge in the exhibition into a single proposal: to see not-knowing as the heart of its action. A conscious choice to embrace not-knowing can also be seen as a form of resistance — a kind of wandering without a known destination, reminiscent of the free-roaming gestures of the Situationists** (Dérive), where the act of walking itself challenges structures of control, purposefulness, and prior knowledge. In our modern world, there’s a demand for constant knowledge and productivity, and during times of war, we’re expected to be even more in control and resilient. Choosing not to know disrupts the expectation of stability and clarity. Instead, it calls for honesty and surrender to the situation as it is: unclear, deceptive, and unstable. Here, not-knowing is a critical act that refuses to accept reality as it is and to normalize the abnormal situation in which we are living. *Epistemology is a central branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of knowledge and cognition and with the ways in which they can be acquired. **The Situationists was a radical artistic, political, and theoretical movement active in Europe during the 1950s and 60s, which aimed to challenge routine, alienation, and consumer culture through wandering, actions, and the creation of new everyday experiences. Shani Avivi Shoshanat Jericho, 2023, video The work Shoshanat Jericho was presented during an artist residency at the Arad Art Center in 2022. During the residency, Shani Avivi participated in a field excursion where she encountered the desert plant Shoshanat Jericho (Rose of Jericho) for the first time, an ancient medicinal plant that grows only in the Middle East. Since the Second Temple period, there are records of traditional, ritual, spiritual, and medicinal uses of the Rose of Jericho across the cultures of the region. The plant is known for its unique ability to detach from its mother plant, roll across the arid desert, and survive without water; only when it is moistened by the first rain does it slowly open and release its seeds. This characteristic has granted it a near-mythical status in regional cultures, where it is seen as a symbol of renewal, survival, and life force. Even today, the plant is used in traditional medicine and rituals, and is especially associated with imagery of birth and femininity: in Christianity, Mary was depicted as holding the plant during childbirth; in Bedouin culture, midwives use it as an herbal infusion to strengthen the uterus, and it is also incorporated into rituals accompanying the opening of the birthing body. Avivi’s work is imbued with personal meaning: as a new mother, she identifies with the image of the Rose of Jericho—it opens, disperses, and generates life, while at the same time carrying a sense of disconnection from prior roots. This movement between renewal and uprooting is reflected in the work and touches upon a profound and complex experience of motherhood. Rachel Kainy Road Sketch wood and drawing on paper, pencil, watercolor, and graphite, 2026. Rachel Kainy, Video, with Yasmin Kainy, 2026, 7 min. Rachel Kainy's work unfolds through an embodied and materially engaged practice of wandering. Using custom-built drawing devices, she draws simultaneously with both hands while walking, allowing her hands, eyes, and feet to move together in continuous dialogue with space. Her body measures the rhythm and frequency of her movement, while the drawing records both the act of walking and her encounters with the surrounding environment. Kainy works with two different drawing tools at the same time. Her gaze constantly shifts—at times directed toward the path and the unfolding landscape, at others returning to the paper. The works presented in the exhibition were created during walks throughout Jerusalem, seeking to capture moments of attention, movement, and observation. Displayed as a continuous scroll on a purpose-built viewing structure, the drawings invite a panoramic, kinetic mode of viewing that echoes the artist's own perspective. Kainy's walks respond to subtle sounds, chance encounters, and fleeting visual impressions generated through movement itself. These experiences are translated into rapid, sensitive, and expressive lines that reveal moments of focused attention alongside moments of drifting. The simultaneous act of drawing with both hands creates a kind of stereoscopic vision: the intersecting lines produced by each hand evoke the convergence of two eyes perceiving the world and merging into a single image. In this way, Kainy becomes a mediator between landscape and paper, proposing an alternative way of seeing, experiencing, and mapping the space she inhabits. The accompanying video documents the drawing process using two cameras. One presents Kainy's point of view and its simultaneous translation into the movement of her drawing hands, while the other observes the artist from the outside as she moves and works within the urban landscape. Ariel HaCohen Belle Époque, 2026, lead and steel nails The work Belle Époque takes its title from the French term for the period preceding World War I in Europe; years associated with cultural flourishing, economic prosperity, and a sense of stability. The choice of this title carries an ironic charge in light of the catastrophe that followed, and in relation to a contemporary reality in which fragility, loss, and threat permeate everyday life. At the center of the work stands the image of the rose, a symbol bearing a dual charge of beauty, love, and purity alongside mourning, memory, and death. Throughout art history, flowers (and roses in particular) have functioned as memento mori, a reminder that every bloom already contains its future wilting, and that beauty itself is transient. This tension between life and death is also embodied in the materiality of the work: the rose is not made of a fragile organic substance but cast in lead, a heavy, dense, and toxic material associated with industry and ammunition. The rose is fixed to the wall with steel nails piercing its body, an act that simultaneously grants it stability and inflicts injury. Through the encounter between the rose motif, lead, and nails, the work resonates with a reality in which death and mourning are present in both public and private space, and seeks to examine how beauty, memory, vulnerability, and grief coexist. Li Lorian A Letter to an Unknown Reader: Epistolary Procedures of Loss, Library Installation: Stones, Paper and Sound, 2026. Readers’ Choir: Mayan Bailey, Dorin Gal, Polly Geltser, Avishag Haetzni, Alona Yuran, Michal Sapir Li Lorian's practice operates at the intersection of academic research and artistic practice, establishing a reciprocal relationship in which each continually informs and reshapes the other. Her work explores the ways texts, voices, and objects carry traces of absence and loss. Created specifically for the Artists' Studios Jerusalem library, A Letter to an Unknown Reader responds to the library as a space of reading, writing, and accumulated knowledge, echoing Lorian's ongoing engagement with text as both a research methodology and an artistic material. The installation centers on a sound work based on an essay written as part of her practice-based doctoral research. Structured as a letter addressed to an anonymous reader, the essay was activated through a collective reading event in which six readers simultaneously read the text aloud, each to herself. Their overlapping voices form a dense sonic texture in which language itself becomes material—an object of listening as much as of reading. The essay reflects on Lorian's earlier project, A Question of Place (2024), which emerged from an encounter between the poetry of Avot Yeshurun and letters sent by his family from Poland. Like Yeshurun's poetry cycle Thirty Pages of Avot Yeshurun—written decades later as a belated response to letters that largely remained unanswered—Lorian's work engages with memory, mourning, and the possibility of responding to voices from the past. Accompanying the sound installation are paper fragments and stones collected from previous participatory performances centered on acts of mourning. Together, these elements create a space in which text is no longer merely an object of reading or interpretation, but a living, embodied, and sonic material situated between research, memory, and artistic practice. Edith Kofsky Window 06, 2025 monotype in mixed media, tactile relief and sun print on archival cotton paper Idit Kofsky presents a life-size (1:1) imprint of the window from her studio at Artists' Studios Jerusalem. Her work explores the memory of buildings, objects, and places through processes that register their physical presence. Using sun printing on archival cotton paper, a time- and site-dependent process involving direct physical contact between paper and object, she explores questions of material and sensory memory. The resulting surface functions as a tactile relief, a physical trace that serves simultaneously as an indexical record and a symbolic image. The cyanotype process is inherently fragile and impermanent. Over time, the prints fade, shift, and gradually deteriorate, much like memories that change and dissolve with time. This ephemerality lies at the core of Kofsky's practice, which understands memory not as something fixed or permanent, but as a living presence whose significance resides in its continual transformation. Window 06 emerged from the artist's desire to establish a personal and material relationship with her new workspace—Studio No. 1 at Artists' Studios Jerusalem. The tactile act of mapping the window becomes a process of observation and familiarization, as well as a gesture of rooting oneself within a new place. Appearing as the trace of a real architectural element, the window becomes a symbol of transition, of looking inward and outward, and of sustained attention to the passage of time. Hadas Duchan The Prophetess of the Night, 2025 Graphite on paper At the core of Hadas Duchan's practice is an exploration of time, consciousness, and the transience of existence. Through the use of light, kinetic mechanisms, and gathered natural materials, her work navigates the tension between impermanence and renewal, memory and growth. Bringing together geological time, natural cycles, and lived experience, Duchan creates poetic spaces that reflect on the human desire to endure, leave traces, and persist in the face of inevitable change. The Prophetess of the Night is a graphite drawing of the Selenicereus, commonly known as the Queen of the Night - a climbing cactus renowned for its rare bloom. Its large white flowers open for a single night each year before withering at sunrise. For Duchan, the nocturnal realm that enables this fleeting flowering is a kingdom of darkness and shadow, where living and inanimate bodies can merge into a single presence. In darkness, forms dissolve and become multiple; what cannot be fully seen holds the potential for transformation, growth, and renewal. For Duchan, the night is also the realm of dreams. The work approaches dreaming as a mode of knowledge: at times an unconscious process through which the mind transforms the experiences of the day; at others, a prophetic glimpse that unsettles linear conceptions of time; or an encounter with landscapes and forces belonging to a parallel spiritual dimension. Like dreams themselves, these moments of insight cannot be possessed. They emerge briefly, leave their trace, and fade. The Queen of the Night, which has accompanied the artist through recurring dreams for many years, appears here as an image of fleeting revelation. Blooming in dazzling whiteness for a single night before fading at dawn, the flower embodies the fragile beauty of intuition and vision—a form of knowledge that arises from darkness, offering a moment of grace and guidance that cannot be held onto, only encountered and allowed to continue resonating in the light of day. Tal Simon Untitled, 2025 Mixed media on canvas, 190 × 170 cm The painting Untitled is part of Ishsira an ongoing series of paintings that Tal Simon has developed in recent years. Born in Kibbutz Be'eri and now living and working in Jerusalem, Simon conceived this image after an extended stay at a hotel housing evacuees near the Dead Sea; a period marked by both exile and revelation. Emerging from this experience, Ishsira embodies a personal journey, a private odyssey through the terrain of painting and the parallel worlds that unfold alongside everyday life. The painting evolves through a dialogue with ink and acrylic, shaped by deliberate physical gestures. Simon repeatedly rotates the canvas, exposing earlier layers and allowing stains and pigments to spread unpredictably across its surface. The canvas becomes a sea through which the figure of Ishsira drifts, taking form in a drawing that is at once assured and delicate. Additional linear elements evoke currents of wind, propelling the figure toward the edges of the pictorial field and beyond. Through this process, the painting becomes both a site of navigation and a space of transformation, where memory, displacement, and imagination continuously converge. Guy Dolev Sound Project – Maazeen 91.30 (Listener 91.30), 2026 Guy Dolev's wandering project, Maazeen 91.30 (Listener 91.30), challenges the architectural and demographic forces that seek to reshape and blur the divisions within Jerusalem. Against a political climate that attempts to erase the distinction between the city's eastern and western parts, Dolev renders this division audible, tracing an alternative territory through radio waves. Driving through the city, he allows disruptions in the reception of the 91.30 FM frequency to determine his route. As he moves between East and West Jerusalem, different radio stations emerge on the same frequency. Rather than resisting these interferences, Dolev follows them, allowing the transitions and overlaps between broadcast zones to shape his movement through the city. The exhibition presents documentation of this journey on a mobile phone. The radio stations are streamed live, broadcasting music that reflects the cultural contexts from which they originate. On one side, Kol HaMusica, Israel's classical music station, shares the frequency with the radio station of AlHussein Bin Talal University in Tafilah, Jordan, which broadcasts music, news, and at times prayers and religious sermons, an acoustic reminder that Jordan governed East Jerusalem until 1967. At moments, the two broadcasts bleed into one another, producing an imagined sonic ensemble that suggests a multiplicity of voices beyond binary divisions. Accompanying the soundtrack are nocturnal views of the city; an urban landscape emptied of people, unfolding through the continuous movement of the journey. Dolev has extended the project into the digital realm through a live online performance and participatory artwork. Using AI, he developed a web-based interface that visualizes radio stations around the world broadcasting on the same frequency - 91.30 FM. Spanning continents and national borders, the interface allows listeners to tune into live radio broadcasts from multiple locations simultaneously while controlling the number of active streams, their volume, and the ways they overlap, creating an ever-changing composition of distant places connected through a shared frequency. Yaron Steinberg The Architecture of Memory, 2026 Spread across a large table is a diverse collection of objects, varying in both their cultural origins and material significance. At first glance, they appear to form a coherent environment governed by its own internal logic. Gathered throughout Yaron Steinberg's life and travels, these objects constitute a collection of memories as much as material artifacts. Each carries its own cultural associations, serving as a witness to a particular place and moment in time. Placed side by side and stacked into architectural formations, the objects establish unexpected relationships with one another. Their arrangements evoke a fundamental human desire for tangible reality in an age increasingly shaped by the virtual. Through this process, memory is given physical form. Steinberg reactivates these everyday objects, investing them with renewed significance as they reflect an inner landscape of recollections and lived experience—an imagined city that becomes a personal map of memory. Ella Cohen Vansover Lucky Snake, 2023 Oil on canvas Braid Amulet, 2023 Acrylic on plaster cast Braid Amulet, 2024 Acrylic on plaster cast Snake Amulet, 2023 Acrylic on plaster cast Ella Cohen Vansover's practice explores the relationship between the ancient traditions of her family and cultural heritage and her life as a contemporary artist, while engaging with the traditions of painting. As part of her ongoing exploration of material and spiritual culture, she presents plaster casts of braided locks of hair preserved from the halakeh (upsherin) ceremonies of her sons. This Jewish rite of passage marks the transition from infancy to childhood, when a three year old boy receives his first haircut, symbolizing the beginning of learning and the acquisition of knowledge. Alongside the braided casts appears a cast of a snake, a recurring motif in Cohen Vansover's work. In biblical tradition and its many interpretations, the snake functions as an agent of transformation, marking the passage from one state of being to another. In the story of Genesis, for example, it signifies the transition from innocence to knowledge, from a natural condition to a cultural one. In both symbolic and formal terms, the snake and the braids are closely connected: each embodies processes of change, growth, and the formation of consciousness, serving as markers of transition between stages of identity, embodiment, and meaning. Elkana Levi Behind the Veil, 2026 Painting, video mapping, and sound Sound collage: Steven Hornstein Elkana Levi's work is an immersive installation that brings together painting, light, and sound. The viewer stands before a painting illuminated through a carefully choreographed sequence of light, while a layered soundscape unfolds in the background: the murmured prayers of different family members, the gentle voice of an infant, and the sound of a saxophone. These distinct sonic elements occasionally converge into a single ensemble. As the light gradually shifts across the surface of the painting, different passages emerge - luminous, richly saturated fields of color that appear and disappear in turn. This interplay of light and sound shapes the viewing experience, revealing spaces that remain open at their upper edge, extending endlessly upward and evoking a sense of reaching beyond the visible and the known. Levi's practice is driven by questions of faith and spirituality, rooted in a profound concern that a world without faith may also be a world without meaning. From this place of uncertainty, he embarks on an ongoing search through painting, study, and prayer. He longs to believe in God, yet does not define himself as a believer; instead, he seeks an experience that might affirm the possibility of faith. Through immersive fields of color and spatial installations, Levi creates environments that engage both body and consciousness. Inspired by the Rothko Chapel, he seeks to create a contemporary spiritual space through painting; one that is not affiliated with any particular religious tradition, but instead invites contemplation, prayer, and reflection, regardless of the viewer's faith or background. Yarden Colsey Body Heat Betrayal, 2026 Thermal camera, incandescent filament, body heat Yarden Colsey's work consists of three interconnected elements that operate through a dynamic of revelation and concealment. Mounted high on the wall, beyond the viewer's reach, a thermal camera detects sources of heat within the gallery, including the bodies of its visitors. Commonly used for military surveillance and reconnaissance, thermal imaging technologies extend human vision by making invisible heat signatures visible. Within the installation, the camera functions like a surveillance device, observing the space from above. Yet Colsey deliberately disrupts its operation. Positioned between the camera and the gallery is a mirrored text composed of heat-conducting filament. Its message remains illegible until it appears on a nearby monitor connected to the thermal camera, which displays the live thermal image in real time. Visitors encounter themselves as color-coded thermal figures, their bodies rendered according to temperature, while the phrase Body Heat Betrayal emerges behind them. The work points to a paradox inherent in the human body: heat, the very sign of life, vitality, and presence, also becomes a point of vulnerability. Colsey proposes an almost autoimmune reading of the human condition, in which the body's own life-sustaining mechanisms turn against it by exposing its presence. The very qualities that make life possible—warmth, movement—also render the body detectable, traceable, and susceptible to surveillance and harm. Nadia Adina Rose Keeping Doors from Slamming Shut, 2024 Fabric, fiberfill, tennis ball In the Belly of the Wolf, 2024 Fabric, fiberfill, polystyrene foam Nadia Adina Rose's work draws on the surreal world of fairy tales while reflecting on the landscapes of her childhood, the experience of migration, and the movement between countries and cultures. Her practice explores the intersections of place, memory, and language, examining how migration shapes inner landscapes, identity, and a sense of belonging. At the center of In the Belly of the Wolf stands the figure of a wolf whose body contains a glowing circular cavity. As viewers move around the sculpture, the opening appears to wax and wane like the phases of the moon. Behind it, a row of forest-like forms suggests fragments or remnants of a distant landscape preserved in memory, while an empty circular opening among the trees echoes the void within the wolf's body. This cavity may be understood as the emptiness left by loss and separation, but also as a generative center around which identity and memory are formed. Similarly, the empty space between the trees gradually resolves into the image of a full moon. The row of trees also reflects Rose's encounter with the Hebrew language as an adult, an experience that profoundly shaped her work as both an artist and a poet. This work continues in Keeping Doors from Slamming Shut, presented in the exhibition space. Installed within a long, narrow, vertical space, the work consists of a row of tree-like forms beneath a suspended moon. Illuminated by ultraviolet light, the installation emits a luminous glow. Through these images, Rose explores the gap between experience and language, between visual form and the symbolic structure of letters, and between what can be expressed and what remains beyond words, much like the opening within the body of the wolf. Matan Ben-Tolila Light Wind, 2011–2016, oil on canvas The works of Matan Ben-Tolila inhabit the threshold between the tangible and the imagined, where forms emerging from inner worlds surface and acquire physical presence through paint on canvas. In this exhibition, he presents two works made a decade ago under the title Light Wind, which he has recently continued to work on so that they reflect the spirit of the present time. On the painted surface, one can see objects resembling sticks or shells, hovering in a space without clear anchoring. They are shaped by an internal logic and order that generate a sense of movement and depth, even in the absence of a defined spatial framework. Yifat Shtainmetz Hirst Water Needle, 2025, monotype Frosted Glass, 2025, monotype The monotype prints of Yifat Shtainmetz Hirst emerge through a process of transfer and transformation: the image is drawn onto a metal plate using liquid paint and squeegees, and then transferred onto paper under a printing press. The passage from metal to paper, from fluid to fixed form, from rigidity to softness and back again, lies at the core of the works and charges the act of printing with both material and emotional significance. The image is formed without prior planning or a predefined motif, developing instead through a dialogue with what unfolds on the surface of the metal plate. Between the ordering, controlling gesture of the squeegee’s geometry and the unpredictable stain-like effects revealed only after passing through the press, a space of uncertainty is created in which the image gradually comes into view. For Shtainmetz, the struggle with the fluid nature of paint echoes a human desire to give form and boundaries to chaos, to “separate water from water,” to create a limit that protects against overflow and allows the psyche its own space. In the tension between control and surrender, the act of creation itself becomes a delicate attempt to stabilize what is, by nature, always slipping away. Water Needle seeks to present an impossible state: piercing a material that cannot be punctured or separated. Frosted Glass turns toward liminal states between transparency and opacity, between revelation and concealment. Milk, a primordial substance associated with nourishment, connection, and formation, is understood here as a product of transformation, joining a broader system of transitions within the work: between body and material, inside and outside, and between what has not yet taken form and what ultimately appears on the surface of the paper; a wonder tied to the alchemical shifts that can occur within the act of creation. David (Duchi) Cohen Wing, 2024, concrete Rujum (Cairn), 2026, ready-made kippot and mixed media The works of David (Duchi) Cohen explore the encounter between matter and spirit, and with the symbolic charge of religious objects alongside their physical presence in the world. Cohen takes familiar items from the Jewish tradition, kippah and tzitzit, and subjects them to a process of material transformation, during which they lose their original function while continuing to carry traces of the meanings once embedded within them. In Rujum, the kippah, typically a light fabric garment worn close to the body, is filled with concrete and plaster, becoming a solid body with weight and volume. The kippot are stacked one upon another like a tower striving upward, echoing a cairn, a monument, or an axis connecting heaven and earth. The aspiration toward transcendence is revealed in its fragility in the torn and cracked uppermost kippah, and the structure as a whole is suspended in instability—between a yearning for elevation and an awareness of material limitation. In Wing, the tzitzit remain only as a trace. After being imprinted into concrete and then extracted, the object itself disappears, and the void it leaves behind becomes an autonomous image. What was once a clear and recognizable religious marker is abstracted and takes on an almost organic or mythic quality—a trace of a wing, an organism, or a momentary movement captured in matter. Here, the tzitzit is present precisely through its absence, as a record of action and as the memory of a body that was and is no longer. Both works move between the concrete and the abstract, between recognizable object and open form. Cohen examines how religious symbols are transformed when detached from the body and from everyday use, becoming a kind of fossilized meaning. In this state, they no longer offer a single definitive reading, but instead invite renewed reflection on the relationships between identity, memory, tradition, and belief. |
