The age of European colonialism started with Columbus’s arrival in America and the discovery of the many gold treasures of the indigenous people of the Americas. The discovery of America ushered in a long period in which the global trading network was completely transformed and Europe started to amass wealth on the expense of the lands it conquered. Many of the treasures discovered in the previous centuries are still displayed in Western museums. These objects carry broad historical meanings, yet for the most part, they are presented within a narrow context in a museum. The lecture will deal with three main issues through the case study of Egypt – plunder as salvage, plunder as a means of cultural appropriation, plunder as a private act of creating a memory.
Hadas Galzer (b. 1984, Jerusalem) is an independent curator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in photography from Hadassah College (2012) and a master’s degree in policy and history of the arts from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (2015). Glazer engages with the manner in which display means reflect social narratives and memories. In recent years, she founded Resisim Project, aimed at expanding social discourse of war memories in Israel. As part of the project, she has curated several exhibitions and directed the project’s Memorial Day services, which offered an alternative format to that of the national services. Among others, Galzer curated the exhibitions Religion, Freedom and City, Plastic, Far from Home, and Interior: Stairway. She received an excellence scholarship from Hadassah College, excellence grant and exhibition support grant from Bezalel, support grant from Nobel Peak Investments and New Spirit. She is currently working on The Sweet Water Canal project, centered around the story of paintings and objects taken from Egypt in the Yom Kippur War.
